    SUN 6 SEP:                      Cuzco - Machu Picchu - Cuzco (B, L)

This morning we will be transferred to the train station for our 3-hour rail trip through the beautifully scenic countryside, which is a foretaste of wonders to come. Firstly, we will ascend the steep terraced hills surrounding Cuzco on a series of zigzags, and then descend to follow the swift-flowing Urubamba River. We will then travel parallel to the Inca Trail, where we will see the ruins of their fortresses and bridges. After leaving the train, we ascend the mountain by mini bus on a switchback road. The climax is the sight of the ruins of this ancient city, intact except for the straw roofs. Machu Picchu is known as the ‘Lost City’ as it was never discovered by the Spanish conquerors and remained hidden until 1911. It is a maze of empty plazas, chambers and palaces connected by stairways carved out of solid rock. The setting on a mountaintop is unforgettable and is why you must ensure that you have a lot of film today!

We will enjoy lunch at the Café Inkaterra prior to our scenic rail trip back to Cuzco, arriving late in the afternoon. On arrival we will be transferred back to our hotel.

(Please note that we have been advised to tour Machu Picchu the second day as Machu Picchu is of a lower altitude.
